Skiing at Lapham Peak
http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/specific/lapham/index.html
The trails at Lapham Peak are by far the best trails for XC skiing within 150 miles of Chicago. Lapham Peak State Park is part of Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Forest system and the Ice Age Trail.
There are large rolling hills with sustained, fast descents and around 25 km of groomed trails for skate and nordic. Rentals are available.
There are two warming huts to start from. No waxing area.

Lapham Peak is located near Delafield, Wisconsin. Getting there is very easy. Take I-94 North and exit 285, 3/4 mile south on County Highway C.
The nearby bike shop "Wheel & Sprocket" (
528 Wells St, Delafield, WI, 262-646-6300,
www.wheelandsprocket.com) operates ski rentals in a small shack on the way to Evergreen parking. They are open Sat 10-6, Sun 10-4:30 and Tu 10-8. The fee is $10(?) per half-day and $15 per day. Skating equipment is $5 extra. They might run out of rentals pretty fast on popular days, so try to get there as early as possible.
The Bicycle Doctor in nearby Dousman, Wisconsin also has cross-country ski rentals available as well as waxing services:
105 N. Main St, Dousman, WI, 262-965-4144. They are a little more expensive then Wheel'n'Sprocket with $22/day rental fee.
Cost
A park entry sticker which is $10 per vehicle or $30 annually (for non-Wisconsin residents) is required. Annual sticker is valid in all Wisconsin state parks, including Devil's Lake. Trail fees are $4 per person or $15 annually (worthwhile if you plan on mountain biking up in Wisconsin during the summer/fall).
